  1. VSRC DAY 1 THIS SATURDAY!
It’s championship season! Day 1 of the Virginia State Rowing Championships (VSRC) is this Saturday at Sandy Run Regional Park. Traditionally, for the two-weekend VSRC regatta, novice and junior varsity boats row in the first weekend and varsity boats row in the second weekend. First and second 8s will most likely row 5/13. Student-athletes know which category they are racing in for States. As always, unless told otherwise by a coach, rowers must be at the boathouse no later than two hours before their scheduled race.

Feel free to check these websites for more information: Regatta Central and VASRA.

A. TIMING: The following was released by VASRA about an hour ago:

“*DRAFT* schedule has been sent to coaches for review. It will be a short day, starting at 8:00 and ending at 12:24 with 8 minute centers (a race will start every 8 minutes). Right now, there is no break scheduled. Heats in the early morning with Finals starting at 10:40. Again, this is a *DRAFT* schedule and will most likely change. The schedule should be posted for everyone to see by 9:00pm this evening (following the coxswain’s meeting).”
Stay tuned to Slack and/or follow along on VASRA’s website.

B. ATTENDANCE: While VASRA is still making final plans for the regatta schedules, the following boats will race this weekend: Women’s Novice 4+, Women’s Novice 8+, Women’s 3rd Varsity 8+, Men’s 3rd Varsity 8+, Men’s 4th Varsity 8+. While no varsity boats row at this regatta, varsity athletes are highly encouraged to attend, if available.

C. OFFSITE PARKING FOR SPECTATORS: There is no spectator/visitor parking at Sandy Run. As a result, families should plan accordingly. For VSRC Day 1, off-site parking is located at South County High School.

      • Parents driving athletes can drop athletes off at Sandy Run and then proceed to South County High School to park. South County High School is located at 8501 Silverbrook Rd, Lorton, VA 22079.
      • Spectators will park at South County High School and take a shuttle bus to the regatta. The cost of the shuttles is $15 round trip paid at South County prior to boarding the bus. Athletes in uniform can ride the shuttle for free.  Families should plan for a 15-20 minute walk or a shorter shuttle ride between where the buses stop (Lot C) and the grandstand.
      • The shuttles are scheduled to begin at 7:00 am (2 hours before the first race) and will conclude running from Sandy Run NLT 1 hour after the last race.

      D. ONSITE PARKING: Onsite parking is limited to the groups below only. There is no fee for these groups to park at Sandy Run.

      • ATHLETES: Loisvale Lot. Plan for the walk to the boathouse!
      • VOLUNTEERS: Lot D.
      • COACHES: Lot D. Please display your green coach hangtag.

Please reach out on the #2023-stotesbury channel on Slack if you’re able to take on this role.

      • Purchase and prep a lot of food (breakfast, lots of snacks, 2 big lunch days on the water)
        • Burgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers for one of the days (these would just be bought and kept frozen until we leave).
        • Pre-cook fajita style chicken and veggies, which can be sealed in bags with a good sealer, then frozen. This will be revived riverside.
      • Freeze and otherwise store the above and other food somewhere securely.

            ACTION ITEMS FOR THIS WEEK

            1. *NEW* TEAM DINNER AND SENIOR NIGHT, FRIDAY, APR 28
This week’s dinner is on FRIDAY, APR 28 in Woodson Cafeteria A. This is an EXTRA SPECIAL team dinner where we will celebrate our 17 seniors so all athletes should try to attend.

Parents of seniors are also invited to attend this special celebration.
            Please RSVP here: https://forms.gle/kvs7isLSpytE5PVn9

If you haven’t volunteered yet this season, we do need THREE more chaperones for this Friday. Sign up here.

            1. *NEW* STOTESBURY CUP REGATTA, MAY 18-20, 2023
Woodson Crew will be participating in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta on May 18-20, 2023. Stotesbury is the oldest and largest high school regatta in the US, and takes place annually on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Coaches are working hard to finalize line ups and we are diligently working behind the seasons to put together all you will need to know about this travel regatta for qualifying boats only. We expect to have more information, to include what boats will be racing, later this week.

Unfortunately, families will need to move quickly once lineups are finalized and announced to book rooms in our hotel block. This event draws more than 10,000 athletes to Philadelphia so hotel space is at a premium. Please stay tuned to slack and email to get updates quickly.

Meanwhile, if you want to learn about this prestigious event, visit the official website at: http://stotesburycupregatta.com/ or check out our SmugMug photos and videos from previous seasons: Stotesbury 2022, Stotesbury 2019, Stotesbury 2018.

            1. AL URQUIA REGATTA, SAT, APR 29
Our next regatta is this Saturday at Sandy Run Regional Park. The Al Urquia Regatta is our last regular season regatta. After that are States (also at Sandy Run), Stotesbury and Nationals! Your Thursday newsletter will let you in on all you need to know about the Al Urquia Regatta, but make sure to put it on your calendar if you haven’t already!
            1. WOODSON CREW STILL NEEDS YOU
Please become part of the team that helps WTW Crew stay up and running. The WTW Crew Nominating Committee is looking to fill the following crucial roles for next year. Current volunteers filling these roles have graduating seniors. Please contact Catherine Backmeyer, the Nominating Committee Chair, on Slack or at [email protected] if you want to know more!
            • Fundraising Chair (currently Alice Wang): The ideal Fundraising Chair is willing to put together and manage a team of volunteers who help organize and coordinate fundraising activities for the team. You work closely with the VP for Communications and the Volunteer Chairperson. You also sit as a member of the Board of Directors and help guide the team in support of the team’s financial plan.
            • Volunteer Coordinator (currently Michelle Byman): The Volunteer Coordinator works directly with the Executive Committee, other members of the Board of Directors and VASRA to offer volunteer opportunities to the crew membership. Developing appropriate sign-up genius lists and logging volunteer participation are the primary duties of this role. This is a great position for someone who would like to fulfill their own volunteer commitment on their own time and has good organizational skills. You also sit as a member of the Board of Directors.

            1. TEAM DINNER, FRIDAY, APR 14
With spring break being over, we are back to our pre-regatta team dinners. This week’s dinner is on FRIDAY, APR 14 in Woodson Cafeteria A.
            • All volunteer slots are full for this week! Thank you so much!!
            • We are having Koobala for dinner and the menu is exactly as it was at the last Koobala team dinner: chicken sandwiches or make your own rice/bean/chicken/veggie bowl, salad, and fries.
            • REMINDERS:
              • Dinner is for athletes only and will be served around 7:15p.
              • NO DRINKS PROVIDED. Athletes bring your refillable water bottles.
              • Athletes: plan to help clean up at the end of the meal.
              • Pick up athletes between 8:30-9:00p.
            1. UNIFORMS
Cheryl Urban, Sportswear Chair, will be at the team dinner (Friday, April 14) with any remaining uniforms, tech shirts and other orders from both 776BC and Boathouse that have not already been picked up. Please make separate arrangements with her via Slack or email ([email protected]) if you need these items before Friday!
            1. TRI-MEET DETAILS
This weekend’s Tri-Meet is a travel meet to the Anacostia River in DC. Only 3 teams compete so it is a fast moving, fun scrimmage. There won’t be official “results” other than the feedback we get from athletes about racing!

When the team travels away from the Occoquan, all athletes will need to arrive at the same time on race day to unload the boat trailer. Similarly all athletes will leave the racing site at the same time once the trailer is loaded after the races.

            A. ATHLETES: All athletes should arrive at 7:00 AM. Please eat a good breakfast, bring plenty of water and pack some healthy snacks. This is a fast regatta, so we will be finished in time for you to have lunch on your own.

Athletes are to be dropped off at the Anacostia Community Boathouse located at 1900 M St SE, Washington, DC 20003.  Any athletes driving themselves are strongly encouraged to carpool as parking at the boathouse is very limited.

Once parents have dropped their athletes at the location above, parents and spectators should proceed to Anacostia Park to park and view the races.

            B. SPECTATORS: If you have family members that can’t watch you/your athlete race because of the hike to the stands at Sandy Run, make sure they put this scrimmage on their schedule. Spectators park alongside the river at Anacostia Park and enjoy a view of the races just steps away from their cars. If you have a bicycle you can follow most of the race on a road parallel to the course. A map of the race course can be found here https://tinyurl.com/Anacostia-Course-Map.

It may be helpful to bring binoculars or telephoto lenses. Since there is not an “official” race schedule, it will help spectators know when their athletes are racing down the course!

            C. RACE SCHEDULE: Racing will begin around 9:00 AM. Each boat will race twice. Athletes should be ready to be picked up around 12:30. Athletes should check with their coaches to see which boat they will be on for Saturday’s event.

              1. SEE AND SHARE PHOTOS
Please share any photos you take at the Tri-Meet with the team! Send photos to our Team Photographer, Colin, at [email protected] AND [email protected] (please send to both email addresses for now) so he can upload the photos into our team photos on SmugMug.
              1. SHOW YOUR TEAM SPIRIT: Be ready for regatta season with your WT Woodson Crew spirit wear. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to the team, so you will benefit the team while showing off your team pride. Shop for items for rowers, as well as for parents, family, and friends. ACTION ITEMS FOR THIS WEEK
              None

              1. *NEW* WOODSON CREW NEEDS YOU!
Did you ever want to be the President when you grew up? Now’s your chance! The WTW Crew Nominating Committee is looking to fill three crucial roles for next year. Current volunteers filling these roles are all either term limited or have graduating seniors. If you have interest or want to know more, please contact Catherine Backmeyer, the Nominating Committee Chair, on Slack or at [email protected].
              • President (currently Tarek Rizk): The President manages the “business” of the team, to include contracts for the coaches and being the primary point of contact for outside organizations as well as the Principal and Director of Student Activities at Woodson. An ideal candidate is passionate about the team and its growth. You will work directly with other Executive Committee members and members of the Board of Directors to ensure the team is running smoothly.
              • Fundraising Chair (currently Alice Wang): The ideal Fundraising Chair is willing to manage a team of volunteers who help organize and coordinate fundraising activities for the team.
              1. *NEW* RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER AT CHIPOTLE, WED APR 12, 5-9pm.
Please join us this Wednesday, April 12 from 5-9p at Chipotle to raise money for the team! The address is 9506 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22031.

Your online ordering code is: 9R32DM6. Please note that fundraiser online ordering is only valid through pickup during the scheduled date, time, and assigned restaurant. Ordering delivery for fundraisers is not permitted at this time.

Make sure you show the fundraiser flyer OR tell the cashier at checkout that you are there for a fundraiser before you pay! If you don’t tell the cashier, we won’t get credit for the sale.
              1. *NEW* TRI-MEET REGATTA THIS WEEKEND
This weekend’s Tri-Meet is a travel meet to the Anacostia River in DC. Usually only 3 teams compete so it is a fast moving, fun regatta. If you have family members that can’t watch you/your athlete race because of the hike to the stands at Sandy Run, make sure they put this regatta on their schedule. For this regatta, spectators park alongside the river and enjoy a view of the races just steps away from their cars. LOTS of details to follow in the Thursday newsletter, but check out the set up here: Anacostia Park.
              1. SEE AND SHARE PHOTOS
Please share any photos you took at the St. Andrew’s Invitational with the team! Send photos to our Team Photographer, Colin, at [email protected] AND [email protected] (please send to both email addresses for now) so he can upload the photos into our team photos on SmugMug.

Athlete and team spring sports photos are available for purchase. You can purchase directly through the website and they will be mailed home to your home!
