May 28, 2024 newsletter

We are officially in the home stretch! Racing is done; now we have an opportunity to gather our thoughts, plan for next year, and celebrate an amazing season! Thank you to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly all season to keep things running behind the scenes and on the front stage. As you now know, this team literally couldn’t operate without you!

1. SRAA DE-RIGGING
Athletes attending SRAA Nationals should plan for their normal practice time (today) Tuesday, May 28 to de-rig the boats.

2. SENIOR VP NEEDED! Help build our program!
We are still looking to fill a non-voting Senior VP position on the Board for next year. This position is designed to give someone who is considering becoming the President of the Rowing Booster Board a year of training before stepping into the position. The best part of this job is that you will be directly supporting and observing, which is a fantastic opportunity to learn how the board and President position works. Questions or interested in learning more? Contact Bill Westman.

3. BOATHOUSE WORKDAY
Still room for some adults and athletes to help winterize the boathouse so that we can hit the ground running next season! Plan for 9a-12p on Sat, June 1. Remember that many hands make light work, so the more folks that show up the quicker you’ll be done. Athletes can get volunteer credit for helping out. Sign up here: Boathouse Workday.

4. END-OF-SEASON AWARDS BANQUET
RSVP and help out at the End-of-the-Season Banquet on Tue, June 4, 7p at Woodson Cafeteria A. Tentative plans are to have a potluck. Please join us in celebrating all the whole team; athletes, coaches AND parents/guardians! This is more than just an end-of-season celebration. Coaches will present awards, we will recognize our seniors and attending parents will have an introduction/vote for next year’s new board members!

5. SUMMER ERG RENTALS
The team will have a limited number of ergs available for athlete rental over the summer. Ergs will be returned prior to the start of winter conditioning in October 2024. The cost to rent an erg will be $200.00 (pre-paid). Payment will be due June 3, 2024 and pick up will be at the end-of-season celebration on June 4, 2024. Sign up now to reserve an erg and submit payment via PayPal.

6. SCHOOL PHYSICALS FOR NEXT YEAR
Each year, it is required that all student athletes have a completed VHSL physical on file before participating in sports. Set yourself up for next season by signing up for the Athletic Trainer sponsored Sports Physical Night to obtain a valid VHSL physical for the entirety of the 2024-25 school year. The cost for the physical is $50.

The Athletic Training Program receives no funding from FCPS, and this event is their ONLY fundraiser for the year. ALL proceeds go towards helping the program purchase supplies.

Sign up for an appointment for a physical here. Even If you cannot make the Woodson event on June 10, sign up for another school’s event using the same form.

7. RECRUITING
Last week there was an Activities Fair at Woodson designed for incoming Freshman to see all the extracurriculars Woodson has to offer. Hearty thank yous to the athletes that manned the table. We received some interest – but to be truly honest – our BEST source of recruitment is YOU. It’s never too early to start talking to neighbors and friends about all that rowing has to offer. Send potential recruits to our interest form at: https://bit.ly/24-25WoodsonRowing or have them send an email to: [email protected].

8. SPIRIT WEAR RECYCLING
Do you have old Woodson Crew/Rowing spirit wear that you no longer wear? Or perhaps you’re looking for a community conscious way to clear up those overflowing drawers? We can help. We will collect your gently used spirit wear for intra-team recycling (think Tag Days) or resale. All items will be reconditioned and washed. If offered for sale, they will be sold for a fraction of the retail price to benefit the team. Help other up coming Woodson families sport their support without breaking the bank. If you’re interested, please join the #spiritwear-resale channel on Slack!

– Sat. 6/1: Last Boathouse Workday, 9a-12p, Sandy Run
