Sign up to help out at our St. Andrews Travel Regatta.
(More info on the regatta itself can be found here.)

  1. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS: We want to extend our profound thanks for all the volunteering you all have already done and are already signed up for. This sport is truly a team effort – both on the water and off. It is certainly not always glamorous, but the way we all come together benefits our athletes and the entire sport! The volunteer slots for this Friday’s team dinner and this Saturday’s regatta are currently full. THANK YOU. But, there are plenty of other positions opening up in the future, so please keep your eye on the various sign up geniuses and this newsletter to stay abreast of current needs. You can always find our current volunteer needs on our website: Woodson Rowing Volunteer Page
  2. *NEW* UPCOMING VOLUNTEER NEEDS: The Noxontown Pond Regatta, aka St. Andrews Invitational, takes place on March 30, 2024 in Middletown, DE. This venue is amazingly beautiful and you get to witness racing up close and personal on the same grounds where the movie Dead Poets’ Society was filmed! We need parents to help with the following for this day-trip travel regatta:
  • Set up the tent and food
  • Serve lunch and maintain food tent
  • Clean up and take down tent.

It is through your volunteer contributions that we are able to provide meals and snacks throughout the day to keep our athletes energized and ready to PULL FOR WOODSON. Sign up here: St. Andrews Volunteers Needed.

For more information on the logistics of getting the team to Middletown, DE, please check out our webpage dedicated to the trip: St. Andrews’ Invitational.

3. REGATTA PHOTOS AND VIDEOS: Thank you to so many parents and athletes who took photos and videos at the Polar Bear Regatta. The BEST way to share your photos, to save them for posterity, AND to get them off your camera roll is to get them to the Woodson Rowing SmugMug site.

There are 2 ways to have your photos uploaded for the benefit of the team:

(1) You can upload them directly yourself. Each regatta will have its own gallery, so keep your eye on this newsletter and Slack for a new link each week.

UPLOAD YOUR POLAR BEAR REGATTA PHOTOS HERE: https://wtwoodsoncrew.smugmug.com/upload/bHRbvV/polarbear2024

(2) You can also send them to Colin, our team photographer, and he will get them on the site. Send your photos via email: [email protected]

Please note: All the photos and videos posted in SmugMug are FREE to download, despite the tab which says “Buy photo.” That’s only if you want the site to print a physical copy of a photo.

Questions or problems? Contact our team photographer, Colin via Slack or email ([email protected]).

4. SPRING SPORTS PHOTOS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE: The spring sports photos that our athletes took on Feb 29 are now available for purchase

GIRLS TEAM: https://vando.imagequix.com/s1152002121

Any questions re: these photos should be directed to the Victor O’Neill Studios customer service team at [email protected]

5. PRACTICE ATTENDANCE: The coaches have been stressing the importance of attendance at practice, so this is a gentle reminder that consistent attendance is CRUCIAL for rowing. First and foremost, rowing is a new/newer skill for most athletes. Regular practice and instruction is the only way to develop more proficiency. Second, boats cannot practice when athletes are missing. This is not the kind of sport where you can shift to playing 3v3 or 5v5. An entire line-up is necessary to take a boat out on the water safely. A specific synergy is developed when a crew rows together over time that is critical to a boat’s success. As a result, attendance DOES influence race line-ups. Finally, of course illness and things will occasionally crop up, so open communication is key. Coaches encourage athletes to advocate for themselves and ask that athletes assume responsibility for initiating timely contact via Slack when they will be late or will miss practice. This allows the coaches to shift plans as needed to maximize practice time. Reminder: Coaches request that athletes contact ALL 3 COACHES ON THEIR TEAM to make sure that there aren’t any missed messages. Please have your athlete consult the coaches with any questions.

6. SPRING BREAK SCHEDULE

7. BOATHOUSE WEATHERMAN JACKET: With the current cold weather, you might be wondering how to get your athlete one of the branded Woodson Rowing Weatherman jackets that some of the varsity athletes are wearing. Well, according to our Sportswear Chair, Cheryl, Boathouse will run another shipment if we have a minimum order of 6. She will be posting photos and pricing in Slack over the next day or so. • Complete USRowing Registration Requirements (outstanding members have been notified).
  • Parent Volunteers: please review the USRowing Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) so that you can positively acknowledge that you are aware of the policies prior to any regatta volunteering.

1. TEAM DINNER, TOMORROW, FRIDAY, MARCH 15!
Our first Friday Night Team Dinner is this Friday, March 15 at 7:00p in Cafeteria A at Woodson.

  • All the volunteer slots for this Friday are full. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
Sign up here to help with future Friday night dinners.
  • Dinner is for all athletes only and will be served around 7:15 – 7:30p (plenty of time to get to the school after practice).
  • NO DRINKS WILL BE PROVIDED. Athletes should bring their refillable water bottles.
  • All athletes must plan to stay for the duration of the meal and for a quick clean up afterwards. Plan to pick up athletes around 8:30-9:00p.

2. REGATTA VOLUNTEERS ALWAYS NEEDED
Gentle reminder that if you sign up, you’re expected to volunteer. If it is a regatta weekend and you are unable to fulfill your duties, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Lisa Veigel, so that she can try to help you find a replacement for your shift.

All volunteer slots for the regatta this weekend are full. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! Sign up here to help at future regattas. Feel free to check back frequently, even if shifts appear to be full, in case others are unable to fulfill their duties. If you sign up to drive a launch, you must have completed the recent launch driver training.

3. ATTENTION ALL PARENT VOLUNTEERS – ACTION NEEDED
There is a new requirement this year that all parent volunteers need to acknowledge the USRowing Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP) that addresses how to report a violation of potential abuse against an athlete. Upon arrival for your shift, all volunteers will be required to sign an acknowledgement form (located at the sign-in table) indicating that they are aware of this policy and how to report a potential violation.  In order to save time on the day of your shift, please review this policy ahead of time so that you can quickly sign the required acknowledgement and head to your post. Please reach out to Lisa Veigel, Volunteer Coordinator, with any questions.  Thanks for your help and diligence in protecting our athletes.

You can find the policy here: USRowing Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP)

4. POLAR BEAR REGATTA THIS SATURDAY, 3/16!
Our first regatta for our varsity boats is this Saturday. Woodson will be racing 5 boats between, approximately, 9am to 1p. According to the current TENTATIVE event list, smaller boats will be racing first. So, all of our boats should be prepared/plan to be the later races of the day. Specific race times will be finalized and shared with coaches late tonight. Athletes should anticipate hearing more about timing by practice on Friday, 3/15.

Feel free to check here for more information: Regatta Central – Polar Bear Regatta.

Results and heatsheets will be posted here, when available: VASRA website.

ATTENDANCE: While no novice boats row at this regatta, novice athletes are highly encouraged to attend, if available. Regattas are a unique experience and familiarity with how they run will help the athletes as they prepare for their first regatta, next weekend. Learning the mechanics and rhythms of a regatta before they participate builds confidence and experience. Plus, it’s fun to watch your teammates race without dealing with your own nerves!

NOVICES: plan to be at the boathouse about 1 hour before Woodson boats hit the water.

RETURNING ATHLETES: Coaches will be setting lineups at practice, so you will hear from your coaches what boat you will be on. Unless told otherwise by a coach, athletes are advised to be at the boathouse no later than two hours before their scheduled race, and coxswains must be there for the coxswain’s meeting.

ATHLETES and PARENT/GUARDIANS: We will communicate specific timing information via Slack as it becomes available. If you aren’t yet on Slack, send a message to [email protected].

REGATTA PARKING AND GETTING TO THE GRANDSTAND
This is always a big deal and a big issue until you realize what the system is like, so we highly recommend that you plan lots of excess time to get to where you need to go. As we all know, Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance, so a little goes a long way. All of the information below, and more, is located on our website. If you’re nervous or curious, go there to learn more: Sandy Run Park Info.

OFFSITE PARKING FOR SPECTATORS: There is no spectator/visitor parking at Sandy Run. As a result, families should plan accordingly.

  • Parents driving athletes can drop athletes off at Sandy Run and then proceed to the offsite parking area. If you are only dropping off your rower, plan on arriving on site at least 15 minutes before your rower needs to report because Hampton Road and Van Thompson Road are sometimes backed up with cars. Tell the parking volunteers that you are dropping off a rower, and they will direct you.
  • Spectators will park at South County High School and take a shuttle bus to the regatta. The cost of the shuttles is $15 round trip paid at South County prior to boarding the bus. Athletes in uniform can ride the shuttle for free.  Families should plan for a 15-20 minute walk or a shorter shuttle ride between where the buses stop (Lot C) and the grandstand.
  • The shuttles are scheduled to begin at 7:00 am (2 hours before the first race) and will conclude running from Sandy Run NLT 1 hour after the last race.

To get to the grandstands from Lot C, you have two options:
1. You can walk. The path is unpaved and very hilly. It is about ¾ of a mile and takes about 20 minutes to walk.

2. You can take the shuttle van which costs a small fee each way. In the past this fee has been $5 EACH WAY. Please plan accordingly. The shuttle runs continuously and takes about 5 minutes.

ONSITE PARKING: Onsite parking is limited to the groups below only. There is no fee for these groups to park at Sandy Run.

  • ATHLETES: parking is available in the Loisvale Lot. Please plan for a short walk from parking to the water!
  • VOLUNTEERS: Lot D (larger gravel lot that is to the right as you pass the gated entry to the park)
  • COACHES: Lot D. There will be designated parking. Please display your green coaches hangtag.
  • STAFF / LOC: B lot, second row from the back. This is the paved lot closest to the water on the right.
  • REFEREES: B lot, back row
  • HANDICAPPED: Lot C, as designated. This is the smaller gravel lot to the left as you pass through the gated entry.

Get ready to PULL FOR WOODSON this weekend and we will see the student-athletes at the pre-regatta dinner tomorrow night!

5. DON’T FORGET YOUR SPIRIT WEAR!
Purchase Woodson Rowing Spirit Wear and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the team.

ACTION ITEMS FOR THIS WEEK
VASRA Regatta Tasks Sign Up.
Team Dinner Volunteer Positions.

  1. REGATTA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE!

Woodson Rowing is required by VASRA to provide volunteers at every regatta we attend. Every family is expected to do AT LEAST one regatta job for the season. If you sign up now, you (1) get your pick of jobs and (2) pre-schedule your volunteer requirement so you know you can enjoy all the other regattas worry free. Scan the sign up for jobs that you can fulfill. No prior experience necessary (except for launch boat drivers): VASRA Regatta Tasks Sign Up.

For novice families, The Polar Bear Regatta is the perfect regatta to sign up to volunteer. Since it is a varsity only competition, you can learn the ropes and see how regattas flow without having to worry about when your athlete is racing. We still must fill the Assistant Dockmaster and Takedown Helper positions. No prior experience necessary! Sign up here: VASRA Regatta Tasks Sign Up.

  1. LAUNCH BOAT DRIVER TRAINING RESCHEDULED FOR SAT. 3/9, 11a-1p

Same time, same place and still room for 1 more driver! Sign up to attend training with Coach Joe Hester. Also, if you’re qualified or seeking qualification, make sure you join the #launch-boat-drivers channel on Slack.

3. PRACTICE REMINDERS

  • Practice times for both the Women’s Team and the Men’s Team
    Mon-Fri: 4:15-6:45p
    Sat: 8:30-11:00a
  • NOTE: Sat. Mar 9 is the last Saturday practice for a few weeks because regatta season begins Sat. 3/16!
  • Late or missing practice? Athletes who will be late or will miss practice should contact their coaches via Slack. Coaches request that athletes contact ALL 3 COACHES ON THEIR TEAM to make sure that there aren’t any missed messages.
  • Parking/drop-off at Sandy Run: review the graphic here.

4. FRIDAY NIGHT TEAM DINNERS BEGIN 3/15

Friday Night Team Dinners begin March 15! Once regatta season officially begins, athletes will gather at Woodson AFTER Friday practices to enjoy dinner together. For our first team dinner, athletes should meet in Woodson Cafeteria A directly after practice. Carpools should discuss arrangements for returning home around 8:30p, as all athletes should be dropped off at the school after practice.

We are still looking for one more volunteer to chaperone and clean-up at this first team dinner. Please use this link to sign up for that slot or any other positions that you are available for: Team Dinner Volunteer Positions.

Please send a note to [email protected] if your athlete has any dietary restrictions.

5. SPRING BREAK DRAFT SCHEDULE

The practice schedule for spring break is being developed and will be released shortly. From a physiology training perspective, ideally there would be 2 practices a day over spring break. However, from a logistics perspective, coaches understand that one large practice block may be easier to manage for families. As a result, the spring break schedule will be a compromise between these two forces. Definite things to note:

  • Sat, 3/30: Noxontown Regatta, Middletown, DE. Details and timeline are still being developed, but you can find some information here.
  • Sunday, 3/31: No practice
  • REGULAR PRACTICE SCHEDULE RESUMES ON 4/1 (despite the students having these 2 days off, these are teacher workdays, so at least 3 of our coaches will be working during the day. As a result, practice times will revert to the regular schedule).

6. DEADLINE FOR NOVICE ATHLETE REFUNDS, THU, 3/7

While we hope no one needs to avail themselves of this, the deadline for refunds for novice athletes (athletes in their first year on the team) is next week.

If you submit a written withdrawal to Woodson Rowing Membership by March 7 2024, you will receive a refund of all fees minus any credit card processing fees and the $25 USRowing Membership already obtained for your athlete. Any questions can be directed to Jenn Ros at [email protected].

7. GET YOUR SPIRIT WEAR BEFORE THE FIRST REGATTA

Sport your support AND help the team financially (portions of all proceeds are donated back to the team) with Woodson Rowing Spirit Wear!

1. SATURDAY, MARCH 2 IS A BUSY DAY!

  • Launch Boat Driver Training. Still room for 1 more driver! Sign up to attend training with Coach Joe Hester. Also, if you’re qualified or seeking qualification, make sure you join the #launch-boat-drivers channel on Slack.
  • Parent Social. Please join us at a Parent/Guardian Social on Saturday, March 2 at the home of Maz and Fredy Chinoy from 6-9p. This is an opportunity to get to know other parents, meet some coaches and members of the board, and learn more about the sport and season. This gathering is a potluck! Please RSVP here so the Chinoy’s know how many people to expect. Wine will be provided by our hosts, but feel free to bring any other beverage of choice along with a food item to share. The RSVP Sign Up Genius lists the location and directions, so make sure you check it out!

2. PRACTICE REMINDERS

  • Tuesday, March 5 practice is at the regular practice time! Since there is no school that day, be mindful of your timing to get to Sandy Run.
  • Practice times for both the Women’s Team and the Men’s Team
    Mon-Fri: 4:15-6:45p
    Sat: 8:30-11:00a

  • Parking/drop-off at Sandy Run: review the graphic here.

3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT SANDY RUN

One of the critical items that is needed for every practice and each regatta is fuel for our launch boats! We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help occasionally fill fuel cans when they are at Sandy Run. You will be reimbursed for this expense – all we need is a little bit of your time. This is a great volunteer job for folks who drive a carpool and stay on-site during practice – a quick gas run during practice and you’re back! If you are available or want to know more, please join the #launch-fuel-planning channel on Slack or reach out to our Equipment and Logistics Chair, Riz at [email protected]

4. DEADLINE FOR NOVICE ATHLETE REFUNDS

5. IMPORTANT LINKS

For athletes: team photos

1. POLAR BEAR REGATTA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our first regatta is less than a month away and we still have plenty of volunteer spots to fill! The Polar Bear Regatta is a varsity only competition, so it is fast paced. Novice athletes and parents are highly encouraged to attend. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to knock out a volunteer credit, refresh skills, or learn and observe first hand. There are lots of opportunities and most of these jobs mean you get to observe racing up close and personal. Please visit the sign-up genius and commit to your shift(s) now: VASRA Regatta Tasks Sign Up.

2. TEAM PHOTOS, THU, 2/29 3:05p

Calling all athletes! Spring sports photos will be taken after school on Thursday, 2/29 in the Aux Gym. If you don’t show, you will not be in the yearbook photo. Some things to note:

  • Please be sure to wear your team t-shirt (the WHITE LONG SLEEVE shirt) for the photos. There will be a board member on hand to provide shirts for those who don’t have them so that you’ll all be in uniform.
  • We DO have practice at the regularly scheduled time on Thursday. Carpools should plan to pick up athletes at the school to head to Sandy Run after photos have been taken.
  • Girls report to Photographer 1 while boys report to Photographer 2.
  • SENIORS should also visit Photographer 3 to have a headshot taken.

3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO FILL FUEL CANS!

One of the critical items that is needed for every practice and each regatta is fuel for our launch boats! 5. LAUNCH BOAT DRIVER TRAINING, SAT. 3/2

Being a Launch Boat Driver fulfills your VASRA volunteer requirement and gets you the best seat in the house. All parents/guardians are welcome to learn. Attendance is limited due to space constraints. Sign up to attend training with Coach Joe Hester.

If you have already completed launch boat driver training in a previous season and are willing to be a driver again this year, please join the #launch-boat-drivers channel on Slack.

Consider joining the Board as our V.P. Activities (5)
  1. MAMMA LUCIA RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER UNTIL 8p TONIGHT!

2. ON-THE-WATER MEETING SLIDES

Thank you to so many of you that attended our on-the-water meeting last week. A copy of the slides can be found on our website, including opening remarks from our Board President, Bill Westman. February 2024 Parent Information Session Slides.

  1. ON-THE-WATER PRACTICE IS UNDERWAY!

Athletes who will be late or will miss practice should contact their coaches via Slack.

We know it can be intimidating with the fluctuating weather, but hopefully this graphic will help clear things up for how your athlete should be preparing for one-the-water practices! Your athletes will be learning quickly what they do and don’t need.

4. TRANSPORTATION NEEDS?

Slack is really the best place to coordinate transportation, especially when there are short-term emergencies. Please join the #carpool channel on Slack or send a message to Jordan, our superhero carpool coordinator, if you have any questions.

5. CRITICAL BOARD POSITION AVAILABLE

Please help us to help you! We are all busy, but serving on the boosters board is very fulfilling. It is a great opportunity to learn how the team functions, behind the scenes. Becoming a Board member fulfills your team volunteer obligation, leaving you able to watch those Spring regattas at your leisure!

We currently have an opening for the V.P. – Activities. This critical role helps organize our team dinners, coordinates logistics for practices and regattas, and serves as a team liaison at away regattas. There are already many helpers in place for this critical role – but this is ALSO an ideal job sharing position. The out-going V.P. Activities is on-hand to provide assistance and ensure a smooth transition, so don’t be shy! Please contact Bill at [email protected] to learn more.

6. CURRENT VOLUNTEER NEEDS

  • LAUNCH BOAT DRIVER TRAINING, SAT. 3/2

Still room for 2 more drivers! One of the more exciting volunteer activities at regattas is to drive a launch boat. Launch boat drivers are responsible for ferrying spectators, officials and referees. Being a Launch Boat Driver fulfills your VASRA volunteer requirement and gets you the best seat in the house at regattas! All parents/guardians are welcome to learn. Attendance is limited due to space constraints. Sign up to attend training on this fun and fulfilling volunteer opportunity.

If you have already completed launch boat driver training in a previous season and are willing to be a driver again this year, please join the #launch-boat-drivers channel on Slack.

  • TEAM DINNER HELPERS

During the competitive season, our athletes will gather on Friday evenings, after practice for team dinners. Our first team dinner will be on Friday, 3/15 in Woodson Cafeteria A! This is included in your registration fees, but obviously we need lots of help to make this happen each week. We need help with setting up, picking up ordered food, and cleaning up. Please sign up here: Team Dinner Volunteering.

  • AWAY REGATTA COORDINATORS

We need a few folks to help coordinate all the moving parts that go into attending away regattas. The 2 regattas we need the most help with are St. Andrews (3/30/2024) and The Stotesbury Cup (5/17-18/2024). You’d primarily be ensuring that our Chuckwagon is stocked and would help with on-site logistics so our athletes can put their attention on rowing fast and attendees can put their attention on cheering! If you’re willing to talk about these opportunities, please reach out to Bill at [email protected].

  • VASRA REGATTA TASKS

Woodson Rowing is required to provide volunteer workers at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA) regattas in which we participate. Each family should strive to complete AT LEAST one shift per season. There are lots of opportunities, and most of these jobs mean you get to observe racing up close and personal. Visit the Sign Up Genius for more information and to sign up: VASRA Regatta Tasks Sign Up.

  • PRE-SEASON SANDY RUN WORK DAYS

Use this Sign up Genius to note your attendance and don’t forget to indicate that you are representing the Woodson Rowing team. Note: Athletes are encouraged to sign up for these workdays. You will receive school volunteering credits for participating!

7.  *SAVE THE DATE* PARENT SOCIAL – SAT., MARCH 2, 6-9p

We hope you can join us at a Parent/Guardian Social on Saturday, March 2 at the home of Maz and Fredy Chinoy from 6-9p. This is an opportunity to get to know other parents,  meet some coaches and members of the board and learn more about the sport and season. This gathering is a potluck! Please RSVP and bring something to share. Wine will be provided by our hosts, but feel free to bring any other beverage of choice. The RSVP Sign Up Genius lists the location and directions, so make sure you check it out!

8.   *SAVE THE DATE* SENIOR NIGHT – FRI., APRIL 26, 7p

It seems so early to be talking about how our very large group of seniors will be moving on from the team next year! Plans are clearly in the very early stages, but parents of seniors – we want you to book this date now! Senior night will take place at the team dinner on Fri., April 26.

LOCATION OF PRACTICE AND PARKING AT SANDY RUN

TRANSPORTATION TO PRACTICE
Unfortunately, we have not reached the critical mass of registrants that we would need to make the bus financially viable. We regret that this option can’t be made available this year. In past years, parents and athletes coordinated and carpooled. This is a wonderful opportunity for athletes (and parents) to get to know each other better!

If you would like help setting up a carpool, our carpool coordinator, Jordan Mason, is here to help! To help Jordan help you, there are the 2 things you need to do:

  1. Fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/ikkQwfWRkjHoa8iZ
  2. Join the #carpool channel on Slack. (You will see messages from last year there. Don’t worry. You are in the right place, new messages will be going up soon)! If you aren’t on Slack, send a message to [email protected] with your name, your email address and the name of your athlete.

Looking forward to an amazing season full of hard work, fun and winning!

1. *TONIGHT* ON-THE-WATER MEETING, THU., FEB 15

The Board will host an on-the-water meeting for parents and athletes on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30p in Cafeteria A at Woodson. Join us to learn what to expect once the competitive regatta season starts. We will share important information for novice and returning parents alike. Athletes are welcome to attend. Board representatives and coaches will be on hand to answer questions. There is not a remote option to attend this meeting, but we will share a link to the slides following the meeting.

2. CALLING ALL SPONSORS! ONE DAY REMAINING

Tomorrow (Fri., Feb 16) is the last day for sponsors to submit logos for placement on the team’s dri-fit long sleeve t-shirt! If you are a potential sponsor or know of a company who would like to support the team AND get their name out to the general public, contact our Fundraising Chair, Ana, at [email protected].

P.S., if your referral leads to $750 or more in sponsorship donations, you’ll get a volunteer credit just for passing that info along!

3. LAST DAY OF WINTER CONDITIONING, FRI, FEB 16

The last day of winter conditioning is THIS FRIDAY! That means that the beginning of the competitive season is upon us. Conditioning on Friday will follow the winter conditioning schedule: 3:30-5:30p, for both the women’s and men’s team.

4. PRACTICE BEGINS MON, FEB 19

Practice officially kicks off on Monday, Feb 19. Although that is a federal holiday, there WILL be practice at the school that afternoon in accordance with the winter conditioning times. Athletes should be prepared for baseline erg testing on this date.

Men’s team: 3:30-5:30p; Women’s team 5:00-7:00p.

On-the-water practice begins TUESDAY, FEB 20. Practice times are as follows, for both the Women’s Team and the Men’s Team:
Mon-Fri: 4-6:30p
Sat: 8:30-10:30a

Please note that these times are when practice BEGINS (not the arrival time)! Athletes who will be late or will miss practice should contact their coaches via Slack.

5. PRACTICE BUS INTEREST FORM DEADLINE EXTENDED

So that folks can ask questions and talk about the practice bus at the parent one-the-water meeting tonight, we are extending the deadline to indicate interest in the bus to FRIDAY, FEB 16 at 5:00pm. At that time, the interest form will be closed. Indicate interest in the practice bus here. Filling out this form does NOT guarantee that there will be a bus. We must get enough interest to make it cost effective, so if you are at all considering it, please sign up. Payment is not required at this time and will only be collected IF the Board is able to get a critical mass of riders (at least 45). Remember, this is not a fundraiser for the team. The bus fee is a direct cost pass-through. More information is available on the registration site.

Also note that for any transportation needs, you can join the #carpool channel on Slack. There is currently only one “neighborhood specific” carpool channel  (#carpool-mantua). If you would like to coordinate carpooling within your specific neighborhood and need a slack channel to do so, please contact Jenn McRobbie via Slack or at [email protected].

6. HAVE YOU REGISTERED?

If you have questions re: registration, please attend the parent on-the-water meeting tonight. Jenn Ros, our membership chair, will be one of many board members present to answer questions. If you know you’re ready to register, please do so here: https://woodsonrowing.org/registration/.

7. TEAM VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • *CRITICAL* TRANSPORTATION/CARPOOL COORDINATOR

We are looking for someone to fulfill the role of Transportation/Carpool Coordinator. This role will be responsible for either coordinating the practice bus chaperone schedule OR helping to facilitate carpools for on-the-water practice. Please contact Bill at [email protected] if you can step into this role!

  • LAUNCH BOAT DRIVER TRAINING, SAT. 3/2

  • CHUCKWAGON WORK DAY, SAT. 3/9

The Chuckwagon is an important part of uplifting the morale of the team. It won’t take too long – but we need to clean and inventory the chuckwagon before we race off into the season. (Bill also wants an excuse to try out his trailer hitch to make sure he can tow it to away regattas). Athletes and parents can Sign up here to help us make sure the chuckwagon is ready for a great season!

  • TEAM DINNER HELPERS

During the competitive season, our athletes will gather on Friday evenings, after practice for team dinners.

You won’t be going it alone – our VP Activities and Equipment/Logistics Chair have most of the info you’ll need. You’d primarily be ensuring that our Chuckwagon is stocked and would help with on-site logistics so our athletes can put their attention on rowing fast and attendees can put their attention on cheering! If you’re willing to talk about these opportunities, please reach out to Bill at [email protected].

8. VASRA VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

As part of our participation in the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association (VASRA), our team is required to help with various VASRA activities throughout the season. Please see some key items that need volunteers ASAP. If an opportunity piques your interest or you have questions, please contact Michael Chase, our VASRA Rep, at [email protected].

  • VASRA LOC POSITIONS: DOCKMASTER AND RIVER RAT

In addition to the one-off volunteering spots noted above, Woodson Rowing is required to fill two VASRA Local Organizing Committee (LOC) positions for this season: a Dockmaster and a River Rat. LOC members are part of the Regatta staff and work the same job for the entire day for every regatta and train the weekly volunteers who assist them on how to perform their duties. No prior experience is required and training will be provided. More details on our website under VASRA Volunteering.

  • REFEREE CANDIDATE

If you’re willing to train to be a regatta Referee, not only will you learn a great skill but you will also help the team by allowing us to reduce Woodson Rowing’s LOC requirements by one position. No advance study, knowledge, or experience is required to volunteer for this position, and a training clinic will be held in the spring. Must be comfortable riding in launches. Referee Candidates have to attend a minimum of five regattas during the season, which do not all have to be at the Occoquan.
