  1. *NEW* PARENT SOCIAL – JANUARY 21st – RSVP NOW

Come one, come all! We will be holding a Parent/Guardian Social on SATURDAY, JAN 21 at the home of Maz and Fredy Chinoy from 6-9pm. This is a fun opportunity to meet members of the board, the coaches, other parents, and to learn more about the sport and the season. The gathering is a potluck. RSVP here and plan to bring an appetizer or finger food to share, along with your beverage of choice. Can’t wait to connect and/or reconnect!

  1. *NEW* ERG SPRINTS – SIGN UP BY JAN 27

Erg Sprints is an indoor competition held annually at Alexandria City HS (Formerly T.C. Williams) where athletes have the opportunity to experience the excitement of competition and compete against rowers from all over the DC Metro Area. Events include 2k’s, 20 minute pieces, relays, and more. It will take place on Saturday, February 4th. All rowers are highly encouraged to attend and many have been planning out their events with their coaches. More information and registration can be found at: https://www.ergsprints.com/

  1. PRACTICE BUS COORDINATOR NEEDED

Before the bus will start running, we need one volunteer to serve as the Practice Bus Coordinator. He/She will serve as a point of contact for both the bus company and the daily parent chaperones. The Coordinator maintains the rider list and contact information for all riders and their families. The coordinator does not need to ride the bus each day, but ensures that all rider families are meeting their chaperone duties and that all bus dates have parent chaperones. Additional volunteer credits are met by fulfilling this position. If you are interested in becoming the Coordinator please message Jenny Champagne on Slack or at [email protected].

  1. SWIM TEST FOR NEW ROWERS – FEB 11 from 4-5PM

If this is your athlete’s first year on the Woodson Crew team, they need to take a swim test before we go out on the water next month. You only need to pass a swim test once in your time on Woodson Crew, so this is for new rowers only who weren’t able to do a swim test in the fall. If your rower still needs a swim test, sign up now. Specific details of the swim test are required by US Rowing and administered by coaches. Test takes place on February 11 from 4-5 PM at Audrey Moore Rec Center pool. Click here for more details on the swim test and to sign up!

  1. WINTER CONDITIONING

The most frequently asked question is “do we have conditioning on X date?”

Great volunteer job for a new rower parent who is going to already be there. No experience needed or required. First to sign up on the sign up genius wins!
  • CRITICAL BOARD POSITION REMAINS OPEN: We are still seeking someone to fulfill the V.P. Team Liaison and Activities role. This critical role will manage a team of folks who help organize many of our events, including coordinating travel to practices and our away regattas. Please contact Tarek at [email protected] to learn more.

Athletes will hand write letters to people within their personal circle to tell them about the sport of rowing, how we receive no FCPS funds, that we rely on dues and donations — and then ask for their support. To prepare: Athletes should compile a list of names and addresses for family members, friends and other acquaintances. All other materials will be provided on the day of the campaign.

  1. *NEW * SAVE THE DATE – PARENT SOCIAL – JANUARY 21st

More details to follow, but mark your calendars for a social gathering of crew parents. December 3, 2022 – 2nd Tag Day Special Edition

Our second Tag Day is tomorrow Saturday, December 3. At the moment, we have a good number of adult volunteers, but we are always in need of athlete volunteers. It’s a great opportunity for your athletes to earn their own volunteer hours while they spend time with their friends.

Here’s the 411 on the team’s BIGGEST and MOST LUCRATIVE fundraiser of the year.

1. WHERE DO I SIGN UP?

2. WHEN IS TAG DAY?

3. WHAT EXACTLY IS TAG DAY?

4. TIMELINE OF EVENTS

5. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?¶

6. WHY TAG DAYS?

1. WHERE DO I SIGN UP?
Click this link to SIGN UP NOW! (Using the sign up genius allows parent volunteers to PRE-ASSIGN groups to routes…if you “just show up” you will likely spend time waiting for a route/driver assignment instead of heading out). The more participants we have, the more quickly canvassing can be completed.

2. WHEN IS TAG DAY?
This Saturday, December 3, from 8:45 AM until 4:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.

3. WHAT EXACTLY IS TAG DAY?
Tag Days are the most important athlete-driven fundraiser of the year.

On Tag Days, athletes (transported by volunteer parents) walk door-to-door in our local neighborhoods. They are given scripts to help them confidently tell Woodson families about the sport of rowing, how we receive no FCPS funds, that we rely on dues and donations — and then ask for their support.

Rowers are always grouped together, so no one goes alone. Groups of 3 or 4 rowers (with at least 1 returning/seasoned rower) will be paired with 1 parent volunteer driver. Each parent volunteer will drive to their pre-mapped route so that the rowers may canvas their designated area. Parent volunteers are responsible for safely transporting rowers, keeping eyes on them during canvassing for safety, and helping them keep track of the cash and checks they collect.

4. TIMELINE OF EVENTS

8:45 AM: Arrive at Cafeteria A.

8:45 – 9:00 AM: Safety Briefing, Map Distribution, Assignments

9:00 – 11:45 AM: Perform Morning Routes

11:45 AM – 12:15 PM: Return to Cafeteria A for a break and LUNCH

12:15 – 12:30 PM: Additional Material Distribution, if needed

12:30 – 3:30 PM: Perform Afternoon Routes. Return by 3:30 PM at the latest.

3:30 – 4:00 PM: Tally results, clean up and clear out.

5. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?¶

ROWERS

  • MUST BRING this form signed by your parents
  • A refillable water bottle. Stay hydrated and then you’ll have water at lunch.
  • A positive attitude!
  • WTW Crew Spiritwear, if you have it. A limited amount of spiritwear will be available to borrow for the day, should you wish.
  • Water

PARENTS

  • Anything you might like to have on hand while sitting in the car for a few hours (water, coffee, etc.).
  • Patience. It can be challenging for athletes who have never canvassed before to speak to strangers. Your kind words and encouragement will go a long way.

6. WHY TAG DAYS?

  • Tag Days are our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year. So, while it might seem a time-consuming event, it helps us keep YOUR registration costs down, pay the coaches and maintain our equipment.
  • A FULL DAY OF VOLUNTEERING (pre- and post-lunch shifts) fulfills TWO of your athlete and/or parent volunteer requirements.
  • For more information and a direct donation link, visit our website: https://woodsonrowing.org/tag-days/

So, what are you waiting for? SIGN UP NOW!

On Tag Days, athletes (transported by volunteer parents) walk door-to-door in our local neighborhoods. They are given scripts to help them confidently tell Woodson families about the sport of rowing, how we receive no FCPS funds, that we rely on dues and donations — and then ask for their support. Everyone who participates benefits. Athletes get volunteer credits while spending time with teammates. Parents get volunteer credits while getting to know other parents and athletes!

ROWERS MUST BRING this form signed by your parents when you come to Tag Days.

A physical copy of the form is required, digital will not suffice. This form only needs to be submitted once, so if you provided one on Nov 19, you do not need to fill out the form again.

2. WINTER CONDITIONING SCHEDULE RESUMES¶
